Earlier tonight, a handful of Los Angeles-based comedians began Tweeting their tributes and condolences for their friend and fellow comic Angelo Bowers. The previous evening, Bowers was killed by a drunk driver. His friend, comedian Josh Adam Meyers (pictured above, with Angelo on the right) was also in the car and, according to sources, is in critical condition suffering from multiple broken bones, but is expected to live. One source says both men were ejected from the car.
At about 9:15 pm ET, comedian Shawn Pelofsky tweeted: “For comic friends and family: I am at Cedars visiting Josh Adam Myers. He has broken bones and is very coherent.”
And though details are vague at this time, what isn’t vague is the outpouring of support and emotion from the hearts of those in the Los Angeles comedy community. Unlike most every performer today, Bowers didn’t have a Facebook profile or a Twitter account. And it seems the only video of him doing stand-up was a less-than-one-minute clip posted on YouTube simply because the comedy goer who shot it, was trying to figure out what his name was– because he liked his set so muchMeyers was scheduled to perform at an independently-produced comedy show tomorrow night at DREAMS Lounge at the Dunes Inn at 5625 W Sunset Blvd in Hollywood at 10 pm. The producers of the show, Jennifer Dyal and Tess Barker will now be collecting donations from audience members in order to help defray the cost of Meyers’ medical bills. One industry insider says that Sarah Silverman had recently seen Bowers crush at a comedy show and the pair had swapped phone numbers in order to keep in touch. Bowers started his comedy career in San Francisco and then moved south to Los Angeles. The insider says Bowers was a cancer survivor. Comedian Eli Olsberg wrote on his Tumblr that Bowers was headed back home to finish up an unspecified medical treatment. Bowers was scheduled to perform at the Laugh Factory in Hollywood tomorrow on the 10 pm show.
Olsberg also explained that “Josh and Angelo were driving and they were struck by a drunk driver. Josh is in the hospital and Angelo is no longer with us.”
He continued: “To anyone out there, comics and friends, please don’t drink and drive! We hear about this in PSAs and always make jokes about how last night we shouldn’t have driven home cause we had that extra shot, a few too many beers, and laugh it off because we’re sitting around joking about it the next day. I don’t know if there was anything Josh and Angelo could’ve done to avoid the !@#$%^&* that did this, but none of us have to be the person in the other car. The only thing worse than being killed by a drunk driver is taking a life because you are the drunk driver.”
