Beth Lapides' Un-Cabaret is the legendary show that the LA Weekly called "The Un and Only" and "The Mother Show of alternative comedy". It's been a hot bed of personal storytelling that fostered the careers of iconoclastic comedy stars like Kathy Griffin, Julia Sweeney, Margaret Cho, Greg Behrendt, Laura Kightlinger, Mike McDonald, Bob Odenkirk, David Cross, Janeane Garofalo, Andy Kindler, Jeff Garlin, Moon Zappa, Andy Dick, Dana Gould, Patton Oswalt and Taylor Negron. Un-Cabaret is where award winning comedy writers like Judd Apatow, John Riggi, Michael Patrick King and Larry Charles have connect directly with audiences. Where luminaries like Jon Stewart, Carrie Fisher and Bill Maher have popped in to try their hand at this comedy free styling.
Un-Cabaret has been produced by Beth and originating producer Greg Miller as a Comedy Central Special, a daily radio show on Comedy World Radio, a podcast on audible.com and three CD's. It ran for 13 years in Los Angeles, (Luna Park, Knitting Factory, HBO Workspace, The Skirball Cultural Center) as well as at the HBO Comedy Arts Festival, The Getty Center, Lollapalooza, and colleges and theaters nationally. It birthed offshoot shows Say The Word and The Other Network. And is the subject of a documentary in the making by Little Miss Sunshine directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris.
The new Un-Cabaret combines the free-wheeling, anything can happen excitement of the original Un-Cabaret with more polished music and a tighter clock.
New performers to the roster include Sandra Bernhard, Marc Maron, Jen Kirkman, Pete Holmes, Alec Mapa, Jill Sobule, Brendan Hines, Moshe Kasher, Arden Myrin, Miss Coco Peru and Roseanne. The LA Times wrote about the new Un-Cabaret. Here's the link. They call the venue, First and Hope, ‘swanky”. And it’s true. They serve delicious Bistro menu, have beautiful lighting, and comfortable seats for uncomfortable times.
Beth Lapides, who is best known for creating Un-Cabaret, is also an award winning theater artist, actress (Sex & The City, Will & Grace), writer and author. She’s appeared on various talk shows and podcasts including Politically Incorrect, All Things Considered and The Today Show and is a former candidate for First Lady.
Co-Producer and Musical Director Mitch Kaplan is an award-winning singer, songwriter and pianist and has worked as a producer, songwriter, and musical director with such iconic luminaries as Sandra Bernhard, Ana Gasteyer and Cady Huffman. His songs have been recorded by artists such as Chaka Khan, Thelma Houston, Sister Sledge and Martika and he's appeared on "Will & Grace", "Roseanne", "The Tonight Show", A&E's "The Sandra Bernhard Experience" and HBO's “I’m Still Here Damn It”.
Mitch and Beth began working together on the music for "100% Happy 88% of the Time" and are excited about expanding their mix of comedy and music into Un-Cabaret 2012.
